My Rule of Life

I am now producing a considerably revised version of my Rule.

Third Order SSF Rule of Life for John Sturdy

• I aim to put God first always.
• I shall read the Bible (sometimes with a commentary) every day; I shall set aside at least fifteen minutes each day for Bible reading, prayer, and study.
• I shall receive the Eucharist every Sunday, and attend Evensong on Sundays when possible.
• When it is readily available I shall receive the Eucharist at least one weekday each week.
• I shall review my behaviour, and make longer prayer, each Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning, with Sacramental Confession as appropriate.
• I shall try hard to stop for thought and prayer before I do anything---to try to break up old habits that hinder my remembrance of my Creator.
• I shall take at least an Annual Retreat---typically for a week, usually in the autumn. This will usually be at a Franciscan or other Religious House.
• I shall work among the Parish as directed by my Parish Priest. I shall take an active part in local Church ministry, both in work that involves people directly (such as my proposed work as a lay reader) and in work behind the scenes.
• I shall make my time and abilities available to the Church in general. This includes such work as typing and clerical work, and handiwork.
• I shall try at all times to remember that I work to the Glory of God in my everyday work--- reinforcing this with a prayertime at the start of the working day. I shall do this work to the best of my ability, remembering by whom this ability is given.
• I aim to tithe when this is possible, and set a basic target of one part in twenty of my income to be given away.
• I will normally ask the pastor of the parish or fellowship in which I regularly worship to be my Spiritual Director. I would hope to discuss my keeping of the Rule and the Way of Life with him or her at least twice a year.
