Sometimes the mentally handicapped (or ``learning disabled'') are described as ``God's special people''. Where does that leave the rest of us? ``God's second-class citizens''? And how about the intellectually gifted? ``God's scum''? or ``The devil's special people''? I'd like to suggest that there's no actual merit in lacking something, nor in being particularly dependent; that it is neither a reward nor a punishment. [find reference: Jesus talking about the people the tower fell on, or the man born blind.]
